We are in the midst of our peak install season, and jobsites are busier than ever. With paving crews, grading crews, landscape/irrigation crews, pipe crews, and others all working in tight windows, even small oversights can create big delays, especially when sod is scheduled. While contractors rarely intend to slow down the process, a handful of commonly overlooked details can turn a simple delivery and/or install into a logistical headache.
- Blocked access routes: We understand that in our line of work, jobsites change daily – that’s the beauty of this industry; however, it also brings challenges. Equipment is moved, traffic shifts, trenches open and close, and materials pile up quickly. Our crews & semis need a clear, stable route – not a maze of obstacles that involve weaving in and out of other contractors also trying to juggle their scope.
- Unfinished or soft grading: Florida’s rainy season makes grading unpredictable at times. A site that looked ready yesterday may now be soft, rutted, or washed out today. Sod follows the contour of the ground, so correct grading is essential. When the ground isn’t stable enough for our machines, that creates a whole separate issue.
- Trenches or drainage structures left open/incomplete: these incomplete areas limit where pallets can be placed, cause us to re-distribute sod & work around areas that will likely be disturbed by other contractors when they come to finish their scope. Having us install sod once all areas are complete & ready for us is ideal.
- Staging areas filled with other materials: mulch, rock, dirt, equipment, and debris often end up in the exact spot where sod needs to go. Improvising at the time of install is not an acceptable option – we all benefit from a designated area clear of obstacles & debris ahead of time.
- Last-minute site changes: shifting access, opening traffic, and adjusting grade at the time of delivery can all throw off the entire plan. Tight timelines & schedules make it crucial to finalize site details before sod arrives.
When contractors righten up these overlooked details, sod delivery becomes predictable, efficient, and stress-free. A few minutes of preparation can save hours of backtracking and keep your project moving smoothly.
