FAQ: Why Bahia?

Bahia’s drought tolerance and deep roots make it ideal for our local areas, and the types of projects we do. It’s widely available, so there is no concern when it comes to quantities needed on large-scale projects. It is low maintenance and great for erosion control – especially in roadside settings.

Known for its drought tolerance, low maintenance needs, and deep root system, Bahia is a Florida native grass, which makes it a top choice for our local climate & soil types.

While Bahia may not be the prettiest variety on the market compared to nursery-grown varieties like St. Augustines, Zoysias, and Bermudas, it has its own market where it fits perfectly.

Being a native grass, Bahia is typically harvested from pastures – that’s why it’s known to arrive on-site with some weed content, and maybe some fire ants & cow patties. The pastures aren’t irrigated or maintained like nursery varieties are. Our fields are certified by the Florida Department of Agriculture to ensure they are FDOT compliant.

We all know that a good root system is what grows a healthy strand of grass, and Bahia is known for its vast deep root system which is what allows it to be drought tolerant once established.

All that to say, Bahia will lose its color in cooler months and in times of drought; however, thanks to its resilience, if it is maintained properly, it will green back up once regular rains resume & nightly temperatures are regularly over 60 degrees.
